Our History
An innovative strategy for reducing youth violence in Philadelphia is the Youth Conflict Specialists project, which Temple University started in 2021. This initiative stems from the broader Resolutionary Partners project, which secured a significant $1.7 million grant from the U.S. Department of Justice's STOP School Violence initiative. Through collaboration with various stakeholders, including the Temple University Center for Conflict Management and Media Impact, the Citizens Police Oversight Commission, the School District of Philadelphia, Achieve Academy East, Excel North Academy, Excel South Academy, Philadelphia Human Relations Commission, Temple University embarked on this ambitious endeavor.
The project targets schools serving at-risk and system-involved youth aged 13 to 21 in high-violence, high-poverty, and high-trauma communities in Philadelphia. With gun violence plaguing the city, particularly impacting young people, the urgent need for intervention is apparent. The School District of Philadelphia's grim statistics highlight the severity of the issue, with numerous student shootings and fatalities.
Over a three-year period, the project aims to provide comprehensive violence prevention training to a diverse network comprising students, law enforcement officers, and school staff. By implementing an integrated conflict management and violence prevention initiative, the program seeks to equip participants with essential skills such as conflict resolution, dialogue facilitation, conflict coaching, and mediation.
Central to the project's approach is the cultivation of trusting relationships between youth and law enforcement. Through collaborative efforts, such as training officers to engage with students in managing conflicts, the project aims to foster understanding and cooperation.
Initially focused on alternative institutions catering to system-involved youth aged 18–21, the project plans to expand its reach to mainstream public schools in Philadelphia.
Crucially, the project aims to empower young people to take on leadership roles in addressing violence within their communities. By amplifying their voices and providing them with the necessary tools, the project envisions a future where these youth become agents of change, contributing to a safer and more prosperous Philadelphia.
The Youth Conflict Specialists project embodies Temple University's commitment to innovative solutions and collaborative partnerships in tackling complex social issues. Through its multi-faceted approach, the project aspires to make a tangible impact by reducing violence and building stronger, more resilient communities.

Our Theory of Change
If we provide comprehensive violence prevention training to at-risk and system-involved youth aged 13 to 21 in high-violence, high-poverty, and high-trauma communities in Philadelphia, which includes basic conflict skills lessons, facilitating dialogue, conflict coaching, and mediation, it will lead to improved conflict management skills and increased awareness of non-violent conflict resolution strategies among youth. This, in turn, will foster a safer and more supportive school and community environment, reducing the incidence of violence and conflict among young people.
